CHAPTER

The History and Motivation of String Theory

Einstein had this dream of a unified theory that would put our understanding of everything, in some sense, together into a single theoretical framework. In the late 60s and 70s, string theory came along which suggested a possible way of putting all of nature's forces together in a quantum mechanical framework. The math only was internally consistent if the universe had more than three dimensions of space.
