The History and Motivation of String Theory
Einstein had this dream of a unified theory that would put our understanding of everything, in some sense, together into a single theoretical framework. In the late 60s and 70s, string theory came along which suggested a possible way of putting all of nature's forces together in a quantum mechanical framework. The math only was internally consistent if the universe had more than three dimensions of space. And depending on exactly when you look at the theory in the timeline of unfolding, the exact number of dimensions has changed for reasons that we completely understand.
