What's the Benefit of Downtime Activities?

The idea is that these are activities that the players would initiate. But I almost feel like that what I'd rather see here is frame to the player, this thing of downtime exists. You can do things around the adventure in these resting periods. It's interesting that we get a different list than the DMG. So again, you have to look in both places to get the full picture as a DM.
