The earliest known dumbbell-like pieces of equipment are called the halterse, and they are made of stone or of metal. We have less evidence of weight training after the fall of the Roman Empire. Benjamin Franklin wrote a letter to a friend when he was 80 years old saying the secret to his long life was a no-wine,. But we really only see bodybuilding take off in a big way in the late 19th and 20th centuries.
