Hannibal expected an uprising from within italy by the various peoples who had been conquered by the romans. But that never really happened. The fact that there was no such uprising is another indication of the success of the romanization process i mentioned earlier. Had hannibal not held back, then much of modern western europe might be speaking some version of phenetian to day rather than a version of latin.
