Any sustained, high intensity muscle contraction is causing damage to the muscle. Running much more than cycling, but still, it's not zero. Your first run after a long break, or if you go play tennis or squash, is going to hurt you for two days. That stiffness is literally the consequence of the molecular process that is healing and repairing the muscle inflammations. A fluid accumulation ono view.
