Cognitive multi tasking is really task switching, or cognitive switching. Our ability to cognitive switch peaks around age 20. If you have a report open and an email comes in, you are not simultaneously reading the email and still working on the report. It's why we can both drive and talk on the phone, but also why it's quite dangerous. We need that same cognitive part of our brain to be attentive to the road.
