How Does Memory Reconsolidation Work?

Emotional learnings don't fade out over time and they aren't supposed to. The brain evolved over hundreds of millions of years so that emotional learnings stay rapidly responsive for a lifetime unless this very special process of memory reconsolidation takes place. Until the late 90s, neuroscientists and memory researchers believed that the brain didn't have a mechanism for it. And indeed, the brain requires a certain set of experiences that unlock the neural encoding of the target learning and update it with new learning. So what we've been doing is applying in therapy sessions or in other words, creating, designing the methodology of therapy in order to focus on creating the same set of experiences as neuroscientists
