I remember reading in your story that she actually passed away before you learned to make machai from her. And it was, your father who actually had a written recipe. So how did you learn to make it? Well, there was a written recipe because my dad was the first member of his family to move to the United States. He came in 1969 to San Francisco and didn't have enough money to visit home for several years.
