B12 is important for red blood cell formation, for nerve function and production of DNA. Since plant based eaters don't eat animals, we really don't have a reliable source in the diet. B12 needs stomach acid to actually decouple from protein and be absorbed. PCRM recommends 100 micrograms per day or about 500 to 1000 micrograms throughout the week.
