I think the way self improvement culture is at large right now is that's the underlying implication of it is like you, everyone is, everyone needs to improve themselves so that they can actually be worthy human beings in this world. If you go into a self improvement venture or a spiritual practice with the idea that you are doing it for the sole purpose of improving yourself, you are in essence building your ego more. So paradoxically in order to become what they would call in the spiritual literature, like enlightened in order to try and get closer to pursue enlightenment, you actually need to not have that as your goal in the first place.
