In 1920s America, Jay Walker was a real term of abuse. Several judges and newspaper editors objected to the use of such an insulting term for pedestrians. Peter Norton says martyrdom could declare victory by 1929. Coincidentally, or maybe not so coincidentally, this was the year the first clover leaf interchange was built in the United States.
