King Leopold II's Mission to the Congo

King Leopold II wanted to be seen as a progressive figure, someone who was a champion of Western Christian values. He tried to sell the international community on the idea that he was actually there in the Congo on a benevolent mission. King Leopold welcomed not only Catholic, but also Protestant missionaries from countries like Sweden, Britain, and the United States. The missionaries say they're collecting evidence about the massacre.
