Aristotelian Meritocracy
I get the impression that you've got a criticism of meritocracy in principle, rather than just in practice. But to me, that still goes against this principle by saying something like, I'm punishing you for your nature - which you couldn't control. That to me seems like an athenma to justice and fairness. And so what you would have is a society in which people are doing things which are rewarded, that people like and accept the rewards for that. And we think they deserve those rewards. People who are bad are accepting punishments that we thinks they deserve as well. To me Seems like by definition, a meritocracy.
