James II's Opposition to Catholicism

Anti-popera is one of the great themes that runs through seventeenth century history. James II's actions did seem to smack of absolutism, writes Rose-Risweet. He was trying to manipulate parliament so it would return MPs favourable to his policies. Stuart Monix had a very authoritarian view of government but believed they were divinely ordained by God and could use it.
