The Importance of Irrelevance
The brain is designed to not be reactive to any stimulus in our world that it deems to be irrelevant. So if there's a fan noise outside your bedroom, let's say, if we hear the noise and we say, okay, I'm just making room for that,. The brain will actually stop processing that that noise exists. But if we say, oh, we got to call up the person who has that fan and yell at them, shut the fan off. And we become more and more intolerant of the awareness of the signal, then the fan noise becomes processed with more and more distress.
