Hewlett Packard created making it a standard in Silicon Valley to give equity ownership. Traditionally instead of granting shares are an outright or RS use restricted stock units, early stage companies will grant options. Options when you grant them, they're not taxable by the IRS because you're granting them at what's considered like the strike price of an option.
