How to Address Difficult People in a Team

If there's one person who has perceived as difficult or ex-difficult in the team, how do you address this topic without putting them in a corner and being defensive? Because to be honest, it is about them. I was working recently with another facilitator coach, just helping her think through a design of a session she's doing because it's a tough one. It's more of a group than a team and I'll be really high level generic here. She listened, she heard, she validated, she confirmed what she would do or not do. And then she had some ground rules around going into that session.
