Socrates can't operate unless his interlocutor is continually coming up with some new way in which actually they do know about piety. In a socratic conversation there are two people like Socrates who are sort of the constructive person and the destructive one. You're not really doing constructive inquiry if you're not also at every moment challenging what the other person is saying.
