Getting a Serum Osmolality in Hypernatremia

Urine osmolality is helpful. Oftentimes we'll see patients that are on chronic diuretics, have chronic kidney disease and they may only be able to get their urine osmolability up to 800 or so. There's no trick questions here. So I'm not sure what value you get from the serum osmolory in the situation. But there are two calculations that you need to do in treating hypernatremia. The first one is figure out what their fluid deficit is. And then multiply that by their total body water.
