Is the Woman in Revelation 12 a Sign, Not a Literal Mother?

The woman in revelation 12 is not mary, and it's not a bodily assumption. The problem of doctor ortland's exegesis is that the woman symbolizes multiple realities. Protestant scholars like william barclay and larry heyler believe this woman can only be mary. But catholics agree though, the woman is symbolic of many separate things and people.
