The Effects of Ketamine on Depression

Ketamine may raise brain-derived neurotrophic, in other words, nerve growth factor, BDNF. By creating a pulse of glutamate release, it triggers a signal in the brain that the pathways are being meaningfully activated. And by stimulating a particular type of glutamate receptor called the AMPA glutamate receptor, you might say it steps on the gas and helps to raise that BDNF level.
