The Evolution of Gout
Gout, unlike many of the diseases that we've talked about on the podcast, is not a fatal disease. It can negatively impact your life in a number of ways, like excruciating pain, reduced mobility and emotional impacts. High levels of serum uric acid can lead to gout; these high levels have also been associated with things such as diabetes, kidney disease, hypertension, stroke, and atherosclerosis. Some researchers think higher levels of uric acid could have been helpful for our primate ancestors in the Miocene around 15 to 20 million years ago.
