i debated hundreds of topics, for and against, recording myself every single time. It was very rusty in the beginning. There were a lot of technical malfunctions and very inappropriate jokes by the little machine that could argue for a motion that was supposed to argue against. Or it would cite the wrong pieces of evidence or go off on a tangent on something unrelated to science. But it was really mentary stuff. I truly did hundreds of debates a honest it was grurling at the beginning too,. Because we had to draw on so much data to be able to debate anything.
This episode, featuring Andy Luttrell of the Opinion Science Podcast, is all about a machine, built by IBM, that can debate human beings on any issue, which leads to the question: is persuasion, with language, using arguments, and the ability to alter another person’s attitudes, beliefs, values, opinions, and behavior a uniquely human phenomenon, or could you be persuaded to change your mind by an artificial intelligence designed to do just that? If so, what does that say about opinions, our arguments, and in the end, our minds?
