A lot of people keep their grip with on the squat too narrow, which inherently places more stress than the shoulder joint. Just take your grip out wider, totally fine. The question that comes to this is, well, aren't you worried about dropping the bar? If your thumbs are the only reason the bar is not dropping, your squat technique is fucked. Bringing your thumbs on top of the bar to get a little bit more external rotation should not be an issue at all.
