The law in India recognizes grave and southern provocation, which means if I kill you, you should have provoked me now. Universities decided that we were getting lawyers so why should we hire teachers? They could get cheap part-time lawyers and pay them 500 rupees a class rather than higher full-time faculty. When I turned 40 my dear friend Shambhada Bashir called me one day to say he would come on as a partner at his big firm because it's very fulfilling.
