Pew decided to quietly phase out the ASR hip replacement because of declining sales. The Pew did not immediately communicate its plans to medical professionals or the public. In August 2010, after continually and consistently insisting that the device was safe, Johnson & Johnson finally recalled both versions of the Pew ASR hip replacements.
