The Theory of Justice and the Vail of Ignorance
John Rawls has been criticized heavily and constantly, but survives. Why does he continue in a position of such importance when he attracts so much like criticism? I think it's because the project is so ambitious and it's so well executed. The level of ambition is to give a general account of what it would be for human beings considered as free and equal individuals to live together under terms that they could all accept.
