The Loss of Roguelikes in Games Culture
Spelunky is very clearly a roguelike even though it doesn't have some of the trappings. I do feel like a lot of roguelike rogue-ish rouge likes that use upgrades in the background stuff are pretty fundamentally different but I'm not sure I can get behind them. There's a general accessibility curve that's difficult for most people and also the kind of time commitment that you're expected from spelunky. If somebody designed a turn-based roguelike that was super punishing that you could play and make a meaningful decision in 30 seconds and you make one decision a day I think you would be able to see something popular in that degree.
