One of the most powerful ways to memorize more effectively is to interleave different subject materials together, rather than study one thing in isolation. So not like switching from studying bird species to calculus problems, but rather inside of calculus studying different similar topics and interleaving them together. Along with that interleaving practicing so that it becomes procedurally fluid.
Dr. Oakley has a diverse background in linguistics going into military service after high school before coming back to get her Ph.D. in engineering. At a young age she believed she wasn't capable of learning math but through applying active studying techniques and learning how to learn overcame her ambivalences.
