Why Is It So Hard to Pay Attention to Someone When You're on the Phone?
A study recently showed the difference between reading on a smart phone verses reading on a book tablet. The smartphone had a higher activation of the sympathetic response, so increased muscle tension and decreased breath rate. Even if you're not looking at it, being visually stimulated can be sufficient distraction to keep us from being present with our loved ones.
