A number of games approaches is with achievements and trophies so that they're encouraging particularly expert players to push themselves. I do love what microbro does with the score mechanics but it wouldn't necessarily work across a bigger game like 868 hack or DCSS. There's ways in which we can design a game which is easy to play but has these extra artificial difficulties that players can put themselves against, he says.
