How Does the Mind Relate to Pain?
Through our lifetime, there's been this tremendous accumulation of deep tension holding patterns in the mind and body. It becomes so much of a pattern that for most of us, it's invisible to us until we sit still. One of the responses that we get involved in as we're sitting, feeling the pain is self-pity. We're afraid to feel pain; often what is fear? What's the manifestation of that? On the energy level? The manifestation of fear is contraction. Ties the tension and even deeper. And so it's not a skillful way to actually relate to the pain to open to it, because it just makes more of it.
