In 1952, Arthur Sackler made a fateful purchase that would cripple the United States and secure his family a place in historical infamy for all time. He bought a company called Purdue Frederick, a pharmaceutical drug maker. Now at this point, the Sackler family seemed to be living the epitome of the American dream. They'd gone from dirt poor refugees to well off groundbreaking physicians in 50 years.
