The Role of Noise in Insects
Insects make courting songs to help two tiny insects find each other in the big wide world. Normally, it's the guys who make all the noise; many times the female can't produce sound or doesn't produce sound. But for the males, getting attention is worth the risk, at least on an evolutionary level. Once they hatch, they climb onto the nearest perch and sing as loud as they possibly can.
