The Gray Area with Sean Illing

CHAPTER

The Negative Effects of Chronic Stress

When you're running for your life, stress increases heart rate and breathing rate. You dump stored energy into the bloodstream to power your muscles but also shut off everything that's not essential in your body. All of this makes wonderful sense if you're being stressed for three minutes of a physical insult. If you're stressed for 30 years instead or stressed day after day and traffic, whatever, you're doing the exact same thing with your body. Lousy stuff. No matter how bad traffic is or no matter how poorly your boss is treating you it won't stop you from getting disemboweled on the savannah like a pile of bleached bones.
