Zelensky's position is not secure, so although he might be planning to bring this standoff to the perfect moment of maximum power and then offer a deal to Russia, his people and his army might not accept such a deal. So we might be forced into a much more dangerous situation, even if Zelensky doesn't want it. I doubt that as long as the war goes on, you would have a coup against Zelensky because that would be suicidal for Ukraine. You could certainly see enough pressure put on him to block a deal.
