SEL: Can you talk a bit about the architecture of the brain and what happens when we're having strong emotional reactions? SEL: Basically the brain evolved from the bottom up and in the midbrain are the social circuitry. The social circuitry particularly important is the amygdala, which is the brain's radar for threat. It can take over the brain's executive center, the prefrontal cortex behind the forehead. And it does certain things that make our responses in the modern world off. We do or say something during an amygdala hijack that we regret later.
