In the Marine Corps, he was responsible for officer recruiting in parts of Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. He went to a college up in Maine that had established a routine to do performance appraisals. "Good systems, bad systems is all about, you know, the culture, the conditions and the implementation" The first version of his book focused on how managers can decide what to do instead of what not to do.
