Building 20 and Bell Labs - A Hub and Speak Architecture of Innovation

Bell Labs produced among other achievements the first solar cell, laser and communication satellite. The transistor probably required Bell Labs' ability to put world-class experimentalists in one building where they could serendipitously encounter one another. Neither Building 20 or Bell Labs offered anything resembling a modern open office plan. They were instead constructed using the standard layout of private offices connected to shared hallways.
