The Buddha's Anger at Davidatta

The Buddha seems to have gotten angry at Davidatta. Some of those passages, however, seem to be later interpolations. I just don't know of any passages in the early tradition that ever recommends anger for anything or condones it. So if anger is present, but I'm not my anger, what happens to the anger in that moment?
