The more you express these emotions, the more likely the person you are thinking about will suffer. In our fully recovered depressed participants, when they heard criticism from their mothers, there was less activation in an area of the brain called the dorsal lateral pre frontal cortex. A scientist at harvard named jill hooley has worked with colleagues who are trying to teach families to be less critical or, much trickier, to stop trying to fix the problem. But it's not a quick fix, and it's not intuitive for family members to think about changing their approach.
