In the 19 fifties, tod rose reports the air force face real challenge. Pilots were dying. Planes were crashing. Accidents that should have been preventable continued to happen. Lieutenant gilbert daniels from harvard was assigned a simple problem: take a look at the air force panes and figure out if something in the plane was contributing to all these accidents. He found that once he figured out the average for all 17, essentially no one fit the average. That in fact, it was a jagged circle.
