Statistics is not something that i've spent a lot of time researching in. So these are just fairly straightforward steps. And then most these are steps that you do just to eliminate possible objections. The reason for this is that many statistical tests assume that data follows a bell curve because that gives nice, neat, stable statistical property properties. People see normal distributions all over the place. There's lots of things in nature that aren't supposed to generate bell curves.
