Increased Productivity and Civil Rights

In Eastern Germany, factories were commonly owned and nobody had skin in the game. This meant there was no single individual that stood to profit if the factory was more productive. The life of these workers in the West was way better because productivity was so much higher. And I think that ultimately it was the economy that killed the East. In some sense, once you have a society where the individual is not terrorized into compliance, this individual will try to take as much freedom as they can get for self-actualization.
