The Place of Freedom in Kant's Moral Philosophy
How free are we to act morally? This is probably the most difficult question that we've tackled so far. It's absolutely crucial to him. He thinks that if we have a duty to do something, it must be possible for us to do that thing. But as we mentioned before, in the critique of pure reason, he thought we couldn't prove that we're free. So moralityis suddenly looking really under threat,. because we have to be free, but we can't prove thatwe're free.
