Learning to Use a Manipulative
For a while on primary, so it was a bit fashionable to have all the minutives out on the table. And there were trays with different sections on and schools are very proud of them. But there was never a real purpose to them. It's still probably common practice in lots of places because they haven't had the training or investment in understanding how to use them. Just I let go. What Johnny and Atal said about knowing your manipulative and knowing the kind of maths that it lends itself to is key.
