The large intestine is a much more defined structure. It sort of goes around the outside of the smaller intestine where the smaller intestine is located kind of in the middle of it. Much of what's excreted as feces consists of dietary fiber, so this indigestible material mixed with mucus from small and large intestine. Sloot off epithelial cells across GI tract are periodically replaced to form part of the compacted intestines. The different parts of the colon have names depending on their relative orientation.
