The Speculative Development of the Ringstrasse
In the shadow of 1848, there is a real interest in ensuring that the city is replanned in a way that keeps it defensible. To that end, you have these very broad avenues which are difficult to put anything across and allows for certain mobility of the armed forces within the city. So Wagner's involvement with the Ringstrasse is that he would actually not only design, but also help to be kind of involved with the financing of various of these rent palaces.
