The Politics of Tariffs
Some governments come to the political judgment that tariffs are going to be popular. When we put tariffs on washing machines, workers in the washing machine industry in the United States cheer. Many of us won't notice and even those of us who notice aren't exactly going to change the way we vote because we paid a little bit more for a washing machine. We often end up with less overall as a society.
