The aztecs built their city on a swamp in the middle of a volcanic valley with unpredictable rain, drought and seasonal cycles. Like many amerindians, capricious ness, the capriciousness of the universe, stood right at the centre of things. Ow it's important to remember that people from different and earlier civilizations were working very often with profoundly different cosmologies. I remember reading a while back about how there are lakes around the world to day that overtime build up these gigantic bubbles of odioxide and methane at the bottom due to volcanic vents in the lake bed.
